It would appear that the gods do not appreciate Mendelssohn. Yesterday, the sleepy village of Gambier was hit by thunderstorms and high winds. Nobody was hurt as far as I know, but a few trees came down on top of power lines, leading to a 10-hour power outage. Our concert was cancelled. There was a fair bit of debate over whether or not we could move the risers, orchestra, and audience across campus to a building across campus which actually had power, but eventually we had to give up. We are now left trying to find a date when we can try to have it again, without losing soloists or an entire orchestral section. I'm trying to remain optimistic, but things don't look very good.
