Maybe I was mean, but I really don't think so

Sorry to (temporarily) steal Joe's conceit of song titles, but it just seemed so appropriate. I refer, of course, to the fate of Laura K. Pahl. Go ahead. Read it, then come back. I'll wait.

Done? Cool.

Now, as a hopefully-soon-to-be-graduate student, and a person who spends a huge amount of time around undergrads, I have less than no sympathy for this woman, and am kind of surprised at the few commenters who think Nate Kushner is being overly harsh. One of them in particular struck me:

Plagiarism is wrong.

But she trusted you to do something, and you screwed her. I agree with the few people who actually called you out for being a horrible person. There were other ways to handle this. The end result may be good, but it does not make your actions any less reprehensible. Hope karma does exist. At least you would get back as awful as you gave.

Shame on you Nate.

"She trusted you?" This is the argument? The person who, knowing it was plagiarism and undoubtedly knew it could get her into trouble, offered a complete stranger $75 to write a paper for her, should be treated with care lest her trust be violated?

I suppose part of me (that same part that wants to adopt every furry critter that crosses my path) hopes that she reads the paper first, sees it's obviously crap, and asks for an extension or something. On the other hand, she has made it through at least two years of college, making Dean's list at least once, which leads me to believe that she's done this before, successfully. If, given that, she isn't intelligent enough to consider that a person's IM profile is not a formal CV (and let's not even discuss her IM style, which brings out my inner Grammar Nazi), then she probably won't even look at it, and will turn it in without a thought.

Caveat emptor, baby.

garden progress: Joe cleared up some of the downed branches, and I got the magnolia leaves out of one garden.
house progress: Let's not discuss that, ok?
what's for dinner? Leftover pork roast and salad. The roast was largely improvised (naturally), but was loosely based on a recipe by Nigella Lawson.

You weren't mean. Obviously this chick didn't remember the old axiom about an illegal contract being null and void. Or something like that.

Grad school? For what?

Music History is the plan. I've been accepted to the OSU Masters program, but am waiting to hear about funding. With any luck I'll find out something this week.

Fingers crossed!
