Thoughts for a snowy December 31
I couldn't let December go by without posting anything, and even more important, I couldn't let 2001 go out on such a depressing note. Therefore, in the hallowed tradition of countless columnists who can't come up with a throughline, I present the ellipsis blog:
There are now several inches of snow on the ground, and it's really quite pretty. The deer have corn cobs to munch on, although they still seem to prefer the shrubs, which is OK, since we don't actually like the hedge much anyhow. The kitties have treats, and we have brownie mix and leftover cookies.

Joe and celebrated the Solstice by lighting a yule log in our new chiminea (sp?) and roasting chestnuts. Hopefully by this time next year, we'll have an actual fireplace. Christmas at Mom's was lovely, even though Mom thought dinner turned out badly. Note to self - if you try to get the same amount of gravy out of a 12 lb bird that you usually do out of a 20 lb bird, the gravy is guaranteed to be a bit bland. Now, I am sitting here, pretending to be able to focus on work, looking out at the snow, all bundled up in the sweater Gillian gave me (thanks, Gill!), and thinking that the winter break is wasted on the young.

Next year, I want to decorate more than the porch. In the dark, our house looks topless.

Projects and plans for the new year include canning (I stocked up on cranberries while I had the chance - yummmmmm), removing the icky wallpaper from the dining room (we finally bought Dif, which should help), painting the dining room and kitchen, and doing something with the living room, even if it's just painting over the existing paneling as an interim measure. Joe and I got each other half a couch each (it's moss green, not purple like the picture - we decided we couldn't commit to being purple-couch people) for Christmas. I love it, and it clearly deserves a nicer home than the current living room.

Soon, I start on 80% time. Looking forward to it a lot. As I explained to Rick, right now I need the time more than the money. WIth any luck, this will let me take Camilla Cai's Brahms class for the spring semester, and give me plenty of gardening/house project time over the summer.

Plans for tonight are dinner of some sort, and a viewing of "Lord of the Rings." Not exactly the hippest New Years, but I'm feeling fogeyish, so it suits me fine.

And so, as a closing thought for 2001, in the immortal words of Huey Freeman, "It's time to put a foot to the behind of another year." Happy new year, y'all.
