End of an Era
My grandmother's funeral was Saturday. Everything was really nice. Even the priest, who I was prepared to hate, gave a good homily. Meredith's eulogy was fantastic, and the whole weekend was filled with good reminiscing. Things I really admired about Marie Julia Gittings:
- She was a devoted teacher, and righteously indignant at being forced to retire from teaching one week before the end of the school year, just because she got married.
- She had lovely fingernails and skin, even at 100 years old.
- She was a voracious reader, going through four books every week.
- She was a young rebel - a flapper with short hair who got married in peach.
- She was born during the Teddy Roosevelt administration, before the Wright brothers got a plane off the ground, and at a time when she had no reason to believe she'd ever be allowed to vote. She lived through two world wars, a depression, Korean, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and September 11, 2001. And through all of those decades, she seemed to suit each one. She was timeless.
Rest in peace Grandma. We'll miss you.
