Goodness - two weeks already? It's been a whirlwind.

The movers came to take our stuff away on Wednesday, and there were a few things that didn't make it onto the truck. Primarily, they were things we'd left in the attic, only to discover later them after the truck had pulled out. Anyhow, these guys were great. If you ever have to hire movers (particularly if you are either moving to or from Maryland, since that's where they're based), I highly recommend Eagle Van Lines. Nice people, great customer service. There was actually a person in the office who helped us at midnight the night before. We had called to leave a message to ask the movers to bring extra packing stuff, and this guy who just happened to be there working late picked up the phone and was highly reassuring. Made it much easier to just go to bed three hours later when we ran out of tape.

On Thursday, June 7, we unloaded the attic stuff and stashed it in my in-laws' garage, then packed the car to the gills and headed out, only eight hours past schedule. I hit a second wind around Wheeling, so we pushed through, arriving in Gambier at around 3:30 Friday morning. Security gave us the keys to our temporary campus apartment, which turned out to be the wrong place. It had not been cleaned since senior week, was messy as all hell, and frankly, had a funk. The cats were in a state, and we didn't sleep well, but we were too tired to do anything about it.

On Friday morning we awoke to a lovely Eastern European woman from maintenance wondering why anyone would be staying in this apartment. Thank goodness she arrived after we were both out of the shower and dressed. We got everything straightened out and they moved us to a different, clean, apartment. At 11:15, we did a final walk-through of the house, and at 11:45 we had closing. We must have signed our names to about a thousand forms and legal documents. The sellers gave us a stack of title deeds to the property, dating back to 1875, which was awfully nice, and the rest is a blur.

Since then, our stuff has arrived, we have finally been able to sleep in our own bed for an entire week, the cats have stopped yowling and we have dealt with a handful of the (many) necessary home improvements. Also, we have discovered bunnies living in the front garden, received a hammock as a housewarming gift, bought a lawnmower, and been serenaded by barbershoppers. Yesterday we went into Columbus to see Panic, an excellent film with William H. Macy, Donald Sutherland, Tracy Ullman and Neve Campbell. It didn't get wide release, but if you can find it anywhere near you, you should see it.

Things are starting to get back to normal, which is a Good Thing. Today will be my first full day of work. Starting to feel more like my life every minute.
