Trying to return to some semblance of normalcy. Actually, we've been working on this for several days now. Thank heavens for cable channels without news departments. Otherwise the images, the chatter, the relentless "we are at war" (With who? How can we be at war with an amorphous concept?) would have been inescapable. Every network and every radio station - Gillian even saw them interviewing the wrestlers on WWF Smackdown, as though they might have some brilliant insights into the situation.

Situation is definitely the wrong word for this. Speaking of which, when did they start calling that room in the White House the "Situation Room?"

Anyhow, our weekend consisted largely of gardening, installing baseboard, renting a fluffy movie, and wishing like hell that Major League Baseball would start the games back up already. Construction continued on both our neighbors' houses, and we returned to our debate over how best to cut down our countertop. I read another few chapters of Clara Schumann's biography, and learned how to make Martha Stewart's favorite margaritas. I talked to Mom and read email from Karen about how Grandma is doing in her new home. I worked a very full day yesterday, without even looking at a news site.

Only occasionally has reality intervened - like when the Food Network forgot to cancel the ad for "The Best Of" that specifically mentioned the fantastic view from Windows on the World. Or when I checked my email and had to wade through dozens of schlock-patriotic poetry and prayers meant to "give me hope" (what is it with presumed Christianty at times like these?). Or when Dan IMed me about a guy in Parma driving his car into a mosque.

Or when I stopped into alt.callahans and was reminded that Rose doesn't have the luxury of moving on so quickly.
